Short Description
The Lead Technologist performs essential duties in one or more sub-specialties of the Clinical Laboratory in a highly competent manner. In addition, he/she provides technical expertise to staff and others and acts as the Manager’s designee in performing delegated tasks. The Lead Tech collaborates with the manager in making decisions in compliance with existing policies, procedures, or instructions.
- Maintains competencies required for a Medical Technologist I and able to proficiently perform in that role.
- Performs department-specific functions required for lead technologist, works closely with manager to create environment conducive to maximum productivity and cost effectiveness, participates in decision-making process (operational changes, interviews), aides in development and review of procedures and policies, takes on and satisfactorily completes projects in a timely manner, acts as a role model for staff.
- Reviews, analyzes, and documents patient results, which include utilization of laboratory and hospital computer systems, testing equipment, and proper documentation and call-back of critical values.
- Maintains knowledge of quality control processes; integrates quality assurance into daily operations; reports inconsistencies and initiates corrective actions, maintains maintenance records, investigate and resolves computer-related problems.
- Trains and/or supervise students as well as new & existing employees. Properly documents training. Develops and performs employee competency assessments.
- Performs related duties or special projects as assigned & required for successful performance of position such as inventory management and ordering; scheduling & time keeping; routinely evaluating workflow in department and adjusting workflow as necessary.
- Demonstrates excellent customer service skills; effectively communicates with personnel within the laboratory and throughout the health system as appropriate; handles inquiries expeditiously.
- Maintains knowledge of and follows all hospital policies and procedures as well as laboratory general and department specific policies and procedures.
- Remains current on regulatory and accreditation standards and new developments and trends in the field; participates in, reviews, and submits results in CAP/API PT Programs; involved with inspection/self-inspection process including checklist completion.
Experience Required
3-5 years' experience required.
Excellent communication skills: ability to interact with internal and external customers in a courteous and professional manner required.
Excellent problem-solving skills: ability to identify problems and offer solutions required.
Ability to work in a collaborative team environment and respect opinions of others required.
Education Requirements
- High School/GED required.
- Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
- Medical Laboratory Science.
License/Certification Requirements
ASCP (American Society of Clinical Pathologists) Registry preferred.
Special Requirements
ASCP Specialist Certification highly desirable.
Baccalaureate degree in biology or chemistry with 3-5 years of clinical laboratory experience may qualify.
The New Jersey Pay Transparency Act requires disclosure of the pay range for this position.
A salary offer will vary based on the job role, candidate experience, qualifications, internal pay equity and market data.
