Short Description

Formula Tech performs a variety of tasks related to the preparation and delivery of formula and human milk orders including, but not limited to: use of patient electronic medical record to process orders; verification of products & order volumes; calculation of feeding; order preparation & delivery; processing of human milk. Product inventory and stocking of designated supply areas; general cleaning; and maintenance of required records. Adheres to standards of food safety and sanitation; regulatory standards; departmental and hospital policies and procedures in the execution of assigned duties.


Overview

Cooper University’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is a 35-bed level 3 nursery. This unit is set up in smaller pods which hold up to 4 infants, except for Transitional nursery which holds up to 12 infants. These infants are often preparing for discharge. We care for infants as young as 23 weeks gestation as well as infants requiring surgical interventions, respiratory support from nasal cannula up to and including high frequency ventilation and nitric oxide. Cooper’s NICU has a Neonatal transport team that will go out and pick up infants requiring a higher level of care, from different hospitals throughout the South Jersey area.

Our NICU consists of all Registered RN’s, attending physicians, fellows, Neonatal Nurse Practitioners as well as Residents. We also have a robust ancillary team including dedicated Respiratory Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, Speech Therapists that address all the feeding issues of the individual infants. We also have Unit secretaries and Child Life Personal.

Responsibilities
1. Assures accurate and timely completion and delivery of feeding orders. Proactively communicates any concerns that may cause delay or interruption in service. Adheres to requirements for infection prevention including hand-washing before and after donning or changing PPE; clean and sanitize work area at start and end of shift – in addition to as needed.
2. Prepares infant formula accurately according to established written formulations, following pre-established feeding preparation procedures and adhering to quality control standards. Uses a gram scale, measuring spoons, syringes and graduated cylinder to precisely measure and mix additive ingredients.
3. Communicates with ordering clinician regarding patient formula and/or human milk orders that require clarification or substitution.
4. Assists in training other employees in formula and human milk preparation and proper techniques as needed. Maintains confidentiality of patient information.
5. Maintains food safety & sanitation standards at all times. Follows requirement for sealing, labeling, dating and proper storage of all products. Rotate product on a FIFO (first in – first out) basis and promptly remove any identified expired or damaged product from inventory/service.
6. Uses all chemicals only according to manufacturer directions and for defined purposes. Immediately reports unsafe condition or faulty equipment to manager/supervisor.
7. Performs identification of breastmilk with RN for thawing, fortifying and labeling 12 hour supply of feeds for each infant according to written policy and procedures.
8. Other job duties as assigned


Experience Required

0-2 years of experience preferred in Pharmacy, Diet Tech or formula/human milk preparation experience in a pediatric environment.


Education Requirements

High School/GED required. Vocational/Technical & Associates degree preferred

Completion of the Infant Feeding Technician Certificate Course (online) provided by the Ohio State University within 90 days of hire


License/Certification Requirements

  • Diet Technician Registered preferred
  • Certified Pharmacy Technician preferred

• Problem solving


Special Requirements

full time, 40 hours a week

Hourly Rate Min $17.5
Hourly Rate Max $27

The New Jersey Pay Transparency Act requires disclosure of the pay range for this position.

A salary offer will vary based on the job role, candidate experience, qualifications, internal pay equity and market data.
